After two years of anticipation, Arch Enemy released their seventh album, Rise of the Tyrant. In their latest creation, all five members give a major F-You to critics questioning their originality. The first track, "Blood On Your Hands," starts off with an air raid siren, an accurate indication of what to expect. The explosion of the Amott brothers slamming their fingers against guitar strings, Daniel Erlandsson's nonstop drumming and of course, Gossow's signature howl gives the song an adrenaline rush only felt during a live concert. The track is both fun and an excellent kickoff to the band's new musical chapter. "I Will Live Again" strangely begins with a space-age dance melody, transforming into an epic battle of booming guitar riffs as Gossow strips down her vocals, revealing a rawer, yet natural, growl perfectly revealing past pains through her lyrics. "Vultures" is the most diverse musical masterpiece that the band has released. It has all the makings of a blockbuster metal hit: The Amott brothers' duet riffing, heart-pounding drumming, and Gossow's ability to shriek like a tortured victim and then snarl like an enraged beast.
There's no denying that Arch Enemy's Rise of the Tyrant was worth the wait. Most importantly, the band has successfully proven that despite having a female vocalist, a rarity in metal, it's a band's determination to both frighten and intrigue that leaves a permanent mark in the listener's ears. Only a woman like Gossow could scream out "Who's your god!" and have men cower before her.
