Undigested Kernel
The Vacation Pictures of Scott Harrison
Scott Harrison, La Luz de Jesus Press/Last Gasp (2008)
By Moira K. Wiley
Some might call it twisted or even disturbing while others might call it the epitome of modern art, immortalized in black and white. Whichever category you fall under, world-renowned tattoo artist Scott Harrison’s Undigested Kernel definitely isn’t for the faint of heart. Forever etched on your brain is the sheer grossness of some of the images. His “dark art” has been sought after worldwide with his paintings exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world. He’s also tattooed all over the US, Mexico, England and Japan. If you’re already a fan, have an original piece of Harrison art forever etched on your body or would like to know more about what goes on inside this artist’s head, here’s 80 pages of creepy cartoonery to enjoy and share with likeminded individuals who see the world in a more bizarre perspective. A prime example is one of his reoccurring characters, an egg-headed half “human” whose lower body is a combination of what looks like a rat and a chicken. This little guy gets himself into some unique situations including sharing a rowboat with a female skeleton wielding an axe, my personal favorite.

This is one coffee table book bound to get a reaction. A real conversation starter, you could debate the meanings behind the imagery contained in Harrison’s book of art for hours. Undigested Kernel is sure to be a hit not only in the tattoo world, but also for anyone not afraid to look at the darker side of life. Fair warning, if you’re easily offended by cartoon violence or sexuality, then this book is probably not for you; but if you’re an open-minded individual who wants to detour over to the wild side of peculiar cartoons, then pick up a copy. Currently tattooing at Atlas Tattoo in Portland, Oregon, if you like the book, you might just want a Harrison original inked permanently upon your person.
