The Human Abstract - Midheaven
Hopeless Records
By Bob Cooper
|
The second album from The Human Abstract is quite a refreshing release for us, and a great leap for the band itself. Midheaven is a concept album of sorts, a collection of ten songs demonstrating that metal can be combined with the feel and instrumentation of classic progressive rock to a grand result without wrecking it. Frankly, I wonder why more metal bands haven’t tapped into this approach to creating music. Maybe it is because they idolize cookie-monster vocals, and maybe they are just afraid that keys will make them sound emo. Who knows? But thank god The Human Abstract had the vision and the guts to lean toward the experimental side on this record. It gives me great faith in the perpetuation of both metal and prog to hear incredible music like this, music that provokes thought, creates visions, and takes the listener on a musical journey while maintaining the heaviness that is needed to make it all interesting!
