From the state of Florida, comes something a little…dark. Another Black Day’s self-titled debut album is a heavy hitter that combines aggressive thrash metal with a little hard rock in the mix. One of the best parts is Matthew Wilkof’s vocals, which offer not only the occasional growl you’d expect from thrash but also melodic vocals full of feeling. Wilkof’s and Ernesto Paez’ complex guitar riffs and solos bring a unique sound to each song that appeal to metal and rock fans alike. Backed up by the pounding drumbeats of Angel Hernandez and bass lines of Das Haas, the overall package is a force to be reckoned with.
The lyrics grab listeners as they speak of wasted lives, degradation, persecution, darkness, madness and death. If that’s not enough, the music behind the words really drives the point home. Track one’s “Another Black Day” gets the ball rolling with a catchy rhythm and you find yourself singing along after the first listen. What grabbed the public’s attention, however, was their debut single, “Wicked Soul.” This one starts out slow, but quickly pumps you up then slows it down again just to pump you back up. It’s a musical roller coaster to the very end and earned the band some much-coveted radio airplay.
With the somewhat backwards religious connotations, the album kind of reminds you of a heavier version of Creed. Take a listen to some of their tunes at www.myspace.com/ablackday.
