Rustmine – Demo October 2006 Crave Northwest
| Rustmine – Demo Unsigned By Soup

I have a confession to make. I'm biased toward Portland, Oregon. The music scene here is lush and filled with artists of every stripe making music for the sole purpose of creation and performance. Bands here have the talent and ability to make it huge on the national stage, yet very few of them succeed on that level. That means the plethora of musicians working in this town deal with the personal touch, reaching as many homegrown fans as they can as those are the ones who will attend the shows.
Rustmine is one such band. With their Demo they intend to get the songs their fans love to hear live into their ears at home. It's short and to the point with only four songs; a taste of what the band is about. So what is this band about exactly? Hard rocking metal, pure and simple. Consisting of Sam Wooley on vocals, Josh Kay and Josh Smeller on lead and rhythm guitar, and Tracy James Finck and Matt Connett on drums and bass respectively, the band is straight forward with an aggressive sound that is geared to getting the crowd to bang their heads and throw up their horns. Wooley's vocals alternate between a smooth melody into a cracking scream frequently and easily. The two Joshes' guitars complement each other well as their arrangements are tight and simple proving that sometimes the direct approach works best. The rhythm of Finck and Connett provide the basis for the rest of the band to stomp around on songs like "Too Late" and "Vicious Cycle".
The metal contingent here in Portland would do well to give Rustmine a chance as they prove that intense focus on crafting unpretentious songs make the final product a polished display of local talent.
